“Fishing and Relaxation”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2015

Spent the 2 nod week of May 2015 here.
We were part of an organised trip of a group of 12, and we had our own personal group of 5, which quickly became assimilated. Impossible not to.
The lodge itself was fantastic.
Cabins each had 4 single beds with a luxurious lounge area, including a huge TV and stereo, why I’m not sure as it was never turned on!
The lodge had 5 boats, we utilised 3 per day between the group.
A pool that was just a godsend at the end of the day, and staff that ensured we never had an empty glass whilst in there.
The main lounge, dining room, and bar was extremely tasteful, and comfortable. Chef Eric with his irrepressible smile describing the 3 course meal he was about to present had our mouths watering.
The laundry basket at the entrance of the cabins was just so welcome, it was like magic, whatever went in there on a night, was washed and either hung in the wardrobe or folded on the lounge the next afternoon.
Arriving back at the wharf on a night and seeing the staff waiting with a cold wet towel and a cocktail was just so welcome and refreshing.
There are a couple of recommendations I would make, and it revolves around the fishing. If you are experienced anglers and boat operators, have a discussion with the skipper and deckie and ensure they understand that.
Also consider taking some of your own gear, mainly in the lighter scale, jigs, plastics, smaller lures.
The important test, would I return, Yes, definately

I booked a trip with Panama Big Game Fishing after trying other fishing camps in Panama as it looked like it was wife friendly as well as good fishing. My wife loved the facility and the fishing was fantastic. Starting with a very energetic and experienced manager Jon, with a great staff and chef, our stay couldn’t have been any better. I have fished in quite a few fishing camps but I have to say the quality of the fishing, food, facility, staff and boats would be hard to beat. They all work hard for you to enjoy your stay on this island. I originally booked 4 days of fishing and ended up fishing 6 days. I had transferred to another island to veg out and lay around on the beach but ended up getting bored and called Jon and fished two more days with him. I had 6 Marlin rises, hooked 4 and tagged 2, a 600# class and a 300# class. I had a great battle with a 400# class Marlin that was spectacular with a set of 5 jumps 300 yds behind the boat before he made a run towards and past the boat ending with another couple of jumps, spitting the lure, and looking at me saying “see ya”! What a GREAT FISH.This was on top of a dozen nice Sailfish and many many Dorados. The boat capitals and first mates were experienced and worked their tail to keep us on fish. They fished a hour longer on the last day trying to get me one last Marlin. I had a great fish and would recommend Panama Big Game Fishing Club to all.

I visited PBGFL in January 2015 and was met on the city side by Aura, a wonderful woman with terrific personality and great knowledge of the city and history of Panama. When we got to David we were met by Alex the “unofficial Mayor of David” awesome guy who has great sense of humor and clearly perfect for the hospitality business. He knew everyone in town and was a great resource for Anything you might want. When we got to the lodge we were met at the dock by John, the GM, and he quickly got us settled in to our very nice double room. Room was more than anyone would expect at a location like this…comfortable beds, good A/C, huge bathroom and living room with TV etc.. Breakfast at 6am and on the water at 630 am. About a 2 hour run to Montousa where we fished most of the time. Lots of birds and bait. We had plenty of action and released Marlin, Sails, and kept a few Dorado and mullet snapper. Mate Narciso aka ” Hollywood” as competent and hardworking as any you will ever fish with. Captain Tati great boat handling skills and all around great guy. Chef Eric prepared awesome meals every night after we enjoyed cooling off in the incredible swim up bar with amazing view. On our off day we had Alex take us to Boquete and went zip lining at Tree Trek adventure and i highly recommend it as well. I have fished at almost every lodge and mothership operation in Panama and can tell you no matter what your expectations are you will not be disappointed here. Be back soon…Dave Saenz

We last went to Panama Big Game Fishing Lodge in 2007. Since then we have fished in several other Central American countries as well as the famous fishing lodge everyone talks about in Panama!…. In our opinion, nothing else matches Panama Big Game Fishing Lodge, so we returned in August 2014. The fishing was still as good and the lodge has been improved hugely since our last visit in 2007. If you want a fantastic fishing experience – either deep-sea or inshore – go here!….We cannot recommend it highly enough. August is not considered the high season for deep-sea fishing and yet in the three days we were fishing (August 6th, 7th and 8th) we hooked up to two blue marlin and one black marlin – all over 300lbs, not to mention all the fish we caught whilst inshore fishing and probably the highlight of our trip – swimming with a whale shark….. and seeing the humpback whales and plenty of porpoises. It was an amazing trip – same as it was back in 2007… the crew and all the people at the lodge try so hard to do everything to make your experience the best…if you are able to go…. do!

Where to start?
Panama big game has taught me what “all inclusive” really means. The first call I received was from Sherri to ask what I like to eat, drink, and what I wanted to fish for. As we chatted I realized we were planning a personalized package. How many drinks we wanted on the boat and what our personal preferences were for after hours as well.
Escorted through customs, all transport, and lodging handled by an outstanding woman named Auda (sp.?) We were picked up by Victor, the manager, and met with a cocktail at the lodge. It could not have been a smoother journey.
The lodge is up on a bluff with unbelievable views from the pool with cocktails and appetizers served freely. “Mr. C”,the owner, is over the top accommodating trying to make your experience one of a kind.
Best of all our fishing was incredible!!!!!! We had two boat slams and two out of the three in our party had personal slams in three days of fishing. Unlike any other place I have charter fished, these guys gave us sun up to sun down. Tati, our captain and Carlos our first mate gave 120% to put us on the fish. Tati’s 30 years of fishing experience in those waters payed off!
I was sad to go, but I know I will be returning!!! We were affectionately named “Team Chewy” by Mr. C.
We will be back to make even better memories.

Our trip to Panama began in late March in Panama City where we were met by the travel specialists who handled our arrival in the airport , customs, luggage & transportation. Aura, from Panama Big Game Fishing Club then provided assistance with city tours & and anything else we needed. After enjoying all the sights of the city & the canal etc. we were whisked away by plane and then a boat shuttle to the island of Boca Brava where we were greeted with a beverage and escorted us the top of the island which presented spectacular views of the waters and a tropical jungle with howler monkeys and hummingbirds. The staff was welcoming and helped us get settled in our very spacious and comfortable rooms. Each evening began with appetizers and drinks poolside, followed by delicious meals in the clubhouse which was a terrific way to wind up your day after being on the water fishing – and what great fishing there was. The captain & crew (communication was a problem – they only spoke Spanish ) took us out to the Hannibal Bank with much activity of pods of porpoises & where we caught a 50 lb. rooster fish and 6 yellow fin tunas ranging in size from 50 – 200 lbs. over a 3 day period – everyone getting their chance with the rod & reel. Panama Big Game Club is high on the island with beautiful views of the water through the trees. It was also a great trip for fishing as we were hoping for Tuna and the captains found them. Our boat caught 6 yellow fin tunas from 35-150 lbs and a large rooster fish. At night we enjoyed appetizers by the pool with drinks at the swim up bar before a wonderful dinner in the clubhouse. The staff Victor, Sherry, Aura, Wan, and Ray, to name a few tried to accommodate all of our wishes to make this an extraordinary vacation.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2014

The lodging and fishing is 5 star quality. My husband has fished in many regions of the world but his passion for big game fish has brought him back to PBGFC over and over again. My husband has fished at Panama Big Game since 2010, before Trevor Gowdy and Guy Harvey featured them in their magazines and on Monster Fish!

On our first trip, my husband reeled in a 700lb Black Marlin, several tuna in the 150 to 200 lb range and snapper. I just got back from my third visit, and again, the fishing was amazing. We reeled in sailfish, tuna, amber jack, rooster fish, cubera snapper, and a record 45lb mullet snapper!!! There were days in our visits that the fishing was not the best, but that is why it is called fishing.

When you get back to the lodge from your long day of fishing, you are greeted by Rey the bartender who has concocted the “Drink of the Day” and a cold wash cloth to help cool you off. You jump on the “train” which takes you up to the lodge were you can walk straight into the infinity pool and cool off. At the pool, there is a fantastic fully stocked bar where in you can order any refreshment, listen to music, eat a small snack and tell your fishtale of the day and watch the amazing sunset.

Howler monkeys inhabit this island. You can hear them first thing in the morning, and watch them migrate to bed down when you get back from fishing. They are very boisterous and animated which adds to the wonders of this lodge.

Cabins are quiet, modern and comfortable with every amenity you can imagine. Feeling sore after a long day of pulling up giant fish? Schedule a massage! Yes, they will bring in a professional masseuse for you.

The staff at Panama Big Game treats you like family and strive to make everyday better than the last. Victor Archbold attends to your every need, making sure your wish is met. Whatever you want, from food to drink to an extra amenity in your room, Victor makes it happen. This lodge would not be the same without Victor. Because I love cooking, I even got to take over the kitchen for a night! Last but not least, there is a wonderful lady that works behind the scenes to make your stay extra special. Her name is Darlis (sp). Darlis makes sure your room is tidy when you get back and any laundry you need washing is taken care of. But incredibly, she does more. I had a hankering for empanadas one day, made mention of it, and the very next day, she had the best lobster empanadas I have ever had, cooked and waiting for me when I came back from fishing. Mouthwatering! She is amazing!

PBGFC is outstanding in all the ways that matter to me when choosing a fishing lodge destination halfway around the world . Fishing — good boats , captains , mates and gear plus a good variety of species within reasonable running distance — matters most to me ; but quality of accommodation , service and food are also very important . This place has it all , plus a hospitable comraderie and “can do” attitude among the staff . Captain Tati and Mate Narcisso are world class , fun to dish with , and we had no language problems (I don’t speak Spanish) . They helped me land the club’s first marlin on a fly rod (300 lb. blue) .

I’ve fished destinations all around the world and would rank PBGFC right up there among the best . It is a long journey from my home in Hong Kong , but worth it .

“One of the best fishing lodges on this side of the world”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2014

I was here for 3 nights at the beginning of December and I have to say, this is one of the few places that lives up to the hype. I work in the sport fishing tourism business so I had heard a lot about this property and it’s 70K likes on Facebook. I have been living and working in Costa Rica for 8+ yrs so I’ve stayed at a lot of nice hotels and fished on a lot of nice boats, but I had butterflies the day before we arrived here I was so excited. From the moment we got there I knew everything was going to be amazing during our time there.

We were greeted with a welcome drink at the clubhouse upon arrival, then the bartender Kenny suggested we go up top to the observatory to take in the sunset. Pretty stunning 360 degree views of the mountains behind you and the Pacific in front of you. The food at the lodge was absolutely amazing. The chef, Zavier, is Panamanian but has spent years in Europe and the Middle East so he has broad horizons in the kitchen. The first night we had three giant Pacific lobsters in a curry sauce, the next night he prepared the snapper we caught earlier in the day, and the third night he made us a pasta of our choice. That wasn’t even the highlight though, his appetizers were Four Seasons quality. We had BBQ chicken wings, fresh fish fingers, chips & homemade salsa, roasted peppers with feta cheese, and even fresh caviar! I could not believe the quality of the food served, most all inclusive lodges serve local food or all seafood from the day’s catch, but this was amazing. By Day 3 we literally had to tell him to stop making so much food because there was only two of us and we never felt hungry.

The hotel it self is luxurious in every detail. It almost is misleading to refer to it as a ‘lodge’ as that implies basic accommodations and a “guys only” atmosphere, this place is anything but. All 4 cabinas come with AC, wifi, 55″ smart TVs, stocked mini bar (no extra charge), huge bathroom, and beds on either side of the bathroom. The beds can be customized to have king beds for couples for twin beds for singles. The clubhouse is where all meals are served and they have a nice bar and another 60″ smart TV in there to watch movies or big games. They also have a nice pool with swim up bar and beautiful views out over the island, and they put up a TV so guests can connect their cameras at the end of the day and share pictures while having a drink. They even have a heated jacuzzi!

Last but not least, we went there for one reason – to fish. This lodge is perfectly located in Isla Boca Brava so it is easy to get to from David and it’s close to world famous fishing spots like Isla Coiba, Hannibal Banks, and Isla Montousa. On any given day you can fish the various islands for huge snapper and roosterfish or head off-shore to search for giant marlin and their legendary ‘cow’ tuna. They have 5 main boats for the off-shore fishing, all of them identical in amenities and built for serious sport fishing. Here in Costa Rica most boats are loaded with 25W & 30W and carry one 50W for a marlin, on those boats they are all 50Ws because the fish are so big. All boats come with tuna tubes, lives wells, outriggers, downriggers, fighting chairs, air conditioning, and popping stations on the bow so a giant tuna doesn’t drag you overboard. To give you an idea of how luxurious this property is from top to bottom, the boats even have Shimano Stella spinning reels – which felt heavenly when pulling up big snapper from the bottom of the ocean.

All in all – from the service you get pre-arrival to the quality of the food to the luxurious accommodations to the world class fishing there isn’t much you’d change about this place. It has won numerous awards for excellence in 2013 and I can see why, the new owner takes a lot of pride in being the best and I can’t imagine too many places that could outdo the PBGFC.

PBGFC worked hard to cater for any personal requests both on and off the boat, ensuring I got exactly what I wanted during my stay. If your looking for a VIP style fishing trip of a life time look no further than PBGFC. Cant wait to return!

I’ve filmed shows at many lodges all over the world and this is definitely among the best of the best. The rooms and food are first class and pool and jacuzzi overlooking the incredible view are the best I’ve ever experienced. I really liked having high speed internet access in my room as well. We caught quality Black Marlin, Roosterfish, Wahoo, Crevalle Jack and snapper in just a few days of fishing. The boats are top notch and I really like my captain and deckhand. This lodge is for those who expect the best.

Would highly recommend to my fishing buddies, family, and friends.

1. Fishing was great…..caught my first marlin…..400 lb black marlin along with cubera and tuna. We limited our fishing to big game. Skilled captain and mates with good equipment and boats.
2. Accommodations were excellent. To call this a simple lodge with cabins would be an understatement. The place is a resort with bungalows. Every comfort imaginable. Large comfortable bungalows with wifii, refreshment center, large screen smart tv, leather lounging area, spa like bathrooms, and soft down bedding.
3. Amenities included large beautiful pool with swim up bar and large screen tv. Pool and spa overlook the countryside and waters below. Great place to relax after a hard fishing day. Gathering place was the top of the hill watering hole. With its large bar, tv, and tables, it provided a perfect place to enjoy the company of our fellow guest, our meal or simply enjoy the towering view of the countryside and waterways with entertaining tree hanging wild monkeys.
4. Staff was great. No request was denied. Meals were filling to the stomach as well as the sight. Mr. C, Victor, Carlos, captain, and chef were great host.

I truly look forward to returning for another great fishing vacation.

Words cannot describe this trip. The fishing, accommodations, their team, food, drinks, as well as the owner are amazing. To many fish to mention but will try; we got a huge black marlin 500lb, huge yellow fin 200+ (plus other smaller ones), big cubera snapper 50, big mullet snapper 40, whahoos, dolphins, and other inshore fish. I have own a boat in Florida and have fished for 25 years and again words can not describe this trip.

My father and I had so much needed bonding time and found the perfect place; Panama Big Game Fishing Club. It’s secluded on a private island. If we were not fishing we were in the pool or the hot tub talking about our great day, getting ready for our next and most importantly my father and I became our best friends again as we used to be.

Thank you all so much and we cannot wait to be back.

Mr. C sorry for such a long message but not only did you give us the best fishing trip we could ever dream up; you brought me and my father back to where we used to be; my best friend and hero.

To all others we planned on staying for 4 nights but stayed for I think 8 or 10 bc of how much fun, great bonding and insight from Mr. C.

Again thank you so so much! I prayed for something like this to get us back together and you did it.

Mr. Victor you are amazing as well….

June 21, 2013 was my third visit to Panama and Panama Big Game Fishing Club. It is hard to believe but each visit has been as exceptional as the previous visit. From the attention Starlite Travel showers upon their clients arriving in Panama City to the greeting from Victor in the David airport, to being chauffeured by boat by Narcisso and Tati, and then being greeted by Carlos with cocktails….. travel to PBGFC is a pleasure.

Victor, Carlos, Chef Eric are superb in taking care of all the wishes and desires of the guests. Carlos even remembered that I enjoyed a margarita on the rocks without salt after a successful day of fishing! Victor made sure that we had Panamanian beer on every boat as requested….. In which Narcisso and Tati made sure I had a cold one in my hand after every successful landing (and sometimes before and in between)!

The accommodations have always been superb. Neat, clean, and complete with wifi. The bedding has always been superb – firm mattresses, quality pillows and linens. I had the pleasure of staying in the Lodge this last trip and felt right at home. Thank you Victor! I was even delivered dinner one evening when I decided not to go up to the club for dinner. That was very thoughtful Carlos, Victor and Chef Eric!

The fishing is so unbelievable I don’t think I can do it justice in words. One has to experience the fishing at PBGFC to believe it. But I can say that Tati and Narcisso are the best team of capitains at PBGFC and I love the Bertram. I have fished with them exclusively on all three trips and love to watch the teamwork and respect these two express for one another while trying to make sure their fisherwomen (men) catch the BIG ONE in Jurassic Park….. “Reel, reel, reel, reel, reel reel, reel, reel…….” I miss the fresh tuna on the return boat trip back to the club to the afternoon appetizers by or in the pool. (That is why I didn’t eat dinner most nights)!

The monkeys even put on a show for us this trip every day. They even came down to say “good bye” to us on our departure morning!

The food is out of this world – spectacular! Never had an unsavory morsel on all three trips.

Thanks again first and foremost Bop, then Victor, Tati, Narcisso, Carlos, Chef Eric, Victor’s mom and all the staff at PBGFC! Three trips I will never forget, and hope for more to come (my son went for Christmas and is begging to return)! I told him if he made good grades in high school maybe we would return for him to catch the BIG ONE. Tosh

Perched high on a hill to maximize those amazing Panama sunsets, poolside drinks with like minded friends, 5 star accommodations with the most comfortable beds in the world, huge showers that I could have stayed in all day, I could go on and on….There is really nothing that Mr. C has forgotten. Then to top it all off, his chef made my mouth water every evening with another fabulous dish, then went out of his way to teach me the sauces that were used.
Ok, I was so blown away by the actual place, I forgot to mention the fishing…….Huge fish and lots of them. This area of Panama is blessed with both size, quality and abundance. My first time to Panama and what a dream. Heavy traveling from Dubai, But when I got of the plane the team were waiting for me as they opened the plain door. I was walked to the VIP lounge where they sorted immigration and my bags for me then of to a hotel for the night as it was late. The next morning was picked up and taken for the internal flight to David and again walked through by the PBGFC team and into the waiting car. If first impressions count I was onto a winner, and I was. Its a hour from the David airport then a small boat ride and a small train ride to save the 200 stairs. The place is stunning on top of a hill in the middle of the jungle. Great infinity pool and sit up bar. The technology is second to none you have smart TVs in the rooms with Skype hard drives and Wi-Fi. when they say it is all inclusive they mean it, I only spent on a massage a couple of times which was needed after catching big yellow fin! All inclusive offered me unlimited of the following food, premium bar 24/7, laundry, fishing, airport pick ups flight and guides. Amazing for once, none of these normal monster bills on check out.

The team are very friendly and go out of there way to help. The best boats crew and fishing tackle I have seen anywhere, for the first time ever I did not use any of my own tackle once so wished I did not carry it. The fishing was hard the first few days as the fish were feeding on these tiny crabs, most frustrating being surrounded by bubbling water with the biggest tuna I have seen. Then it started after a few days when the crabs were gone with my new personal records on Yellow fin, Rooster fish and Grouper. I did not catch the Marlin I went for though, but then that’s why its called fishing and not catching I suppose. A few tips for you, you only get 15 kg luggage with the local airline coming from Panama city, so don’t bring your tackle as you don’t need it with the best of Shimano and Pen. Tell the chef what you like for lunch on the boat. Swim in the pool as I hear there are salt water crocks in the sea. Take a back up pair of sunglasses and water proof sun cream. If you get the chance go and see the mangroves do so, but don’t waist your time fishing there as the inshore and off shore is awesome . Go for the Fishing, wild life, peace and biggest movie collection ever as you are a hour away from anything else.

Now for the fishing my son has not stopped taking about it since he caught a 70 IB Wahoo and a 72-75 IB Rooster fish which had it been weighed on land scales would have broken the world record for junior angler but the fish was returned alive.

This I might add is also a policy of the owner Mr.C. Quiet rightly to protect the areas fish stock.

I’ve visited 19 countries with innumerable stays at rudimentary shelters to lodging for the rich and famous. I must say I was impressed, pampered and “wowed” by the ownership, staff, facilities, food and activities at the Panama Big Game Fishing Cub. Located on a jungle-covered hillside on Boca Brava Island, the first thing I appreciated was a bright blue tram (“the train”) that uses a cable system to deliver guests “fresh” to the top where the spa/pool, dining room and my suite was located. This avoids the 198 steps after a long day of fishing or other activities a guest desires. Thank you Mr. C! The new owner and visionary for this special place who is also a part time resident of Dubai, has the clout to realize it. Mr. C has not only invested $6 million but is predicting a total of $20 million before he is completed with new suites with private spas, expansion of the dockage space and additional gameboats.

The private-style cabanas are immaculate with expansive views, air conditioning, additional silent fans, big screen TV. There are huge showers with “deluge” shower heads (“I don’t like weak shower flow,” says Mr. C), in-room coffee maker with whole coffee beans on top for fresh ground (nice touch but I didn’t get to use it since hot coffee was delivered every morning with my wake-up knock before fishing). The spa and pool are situated to overlook the river below framed by jungle and entertaining howler monkeys in the morning and evening hours as they compete for nearby fruit. To make sure the monkeys are not displaced with the new construction, Mr. C will plant hundreds of native fruit trees that will be selected to offer ripening fruit all year. There is a bar and big screen entertainment center at the pool “Tall Tails” where anglers meet to tell fish stories of the day. We didn’t have to lie about our biggest fish of the week-a 168-pound yellowfin tuna caught on spinning gear and a popper. Scattered around the complex are two-way phones where guests can make requests. Mr. C likes to emphasize, “If you didn’t get everything you want then you didn’t ask for it,” which tells you his zealous intent to satisfy guests.

The dining room is like an upscale restaurant with tablecloths, comfortable seating, scenic views and gourmet natural food including lobster thermidor, fresh fish, meats and vegetables. Be prepared to encounter deserts such as mango with vanilla ice cream and cherries, strawberry floats and pastries. Afternoon snacks included spicy buffalo wings, fresh tuna skewers, pepperoni pizza and ahi sashimi with soy sauce and wasabi. If you get up in the morning, breakfasts are made to order with huevos rancheros, eggs over easy with a side of bacon and toast and a variety of cereals with fresh fruit were common requests.

The staff makes the place first class and you won’t find any better boat crew than Capt. Chombo Antonio and mate Michael Rios and supporting staff on land such as Victor and Bartolito. Mr. C puts the same amount of effort into work and play to the point where they become inseparable and has the message blazoned on a prominent wall. He has done very well as a great host, along with his wife Karen, and has a vision to make Panama Big Game Fishing Club even better.

The pool/spa/bar is super clean and refreshing. The first late afternoon after great fishing, I dove in thinking “is this for real” and then I looked up to see a 1/2 dozen monkeys in the trees just above me. What is really impressive is that all of this is combined with awesome fishing, crew and boats. I loved the 31 Carolina and the captain/mate were top notch. I was not too concerned becouse I knew the PBGFC would not leave me stranded. We arrived later in the evening and went up to “spectacular pool” and met with Mr. C for the first time in person. Had a few cocktails, and ate a late supper they had prepared for us while lounging in pool from a long day of travelling. When we strolled down the steps to our “Paradise Palace” Tuna IV, our luggage was there and I walked around and was amazed how pleasantly appealing the quarters were. Unfortunately, we only had to days to fish becouse we needed to get back to Panama City for a reunion. (I could live there year round). In the two days of fishing, we did catch quite a few fish, but not the big blue or black I wanted, but hey, that’s why it’s called “fishing”. Lost at least one hook up on a Bill due to my lack of experience with these type of fish. The other group that went out did manage to hook a beautiful Marlin and plenty of tuna! I was also fortunate enough to talk with Mr. C and his Lovely wife personnally and enjoyed the conversations. Made me feel like we had been friends for a long while. “The “pampered Angler”- Panama Big Game Fishing Club”

There was just one thing wrong with my stay at Panama Big Game Fishing Club……it wasn’t long enough! It’s one thing to fish for some of the largest fish on the planet (and catch them), but then, each evening when you return to the lodge to really be pampered, well to me it’s heaven on earth.
My every wish was their command. I experienced a combination of sports and beauty on a little island of Panama the likes of which I could have only have dreamed about. This is a gorgeous fishing lodge that could be mistaken for a hide out for “The Rich and Famous”. Mr C. the owner has provided just about every service one could require. The staff is well trained, polite, clean and very intelligent. I could think of many adjectives to describe this slice of heaven but the one I prefer is “Beautiful”. There’s a gorgeous pool with a swim-up bar and a gentleman to keep your glass filled. Then there’s the attached Jacuzzi with a temperature to suit YOUR need. While sitting at the pool/bar you may enjoy a 55 inch television viewing your video or daily photo’s. Plus there’s a library of many different sports video’s for your enjoyment.

By the way, you won’t need to bring any tackle except perhaps your favorite reel. What Mr. C. has spent on tackle, puts the other lodges to shame. An order for $50,000.of equipment came in while I was there, and all I could do, under my breath, was say “YESSSSS! The Cabana’s are very well appointed with T.v. phone, computer equip. Motion censor’s to save electricity. A shower with a very nice seat built into the wall and a shower head that can be adjusted to rain down on you as you sit and think ” what are the poor people doing”. Since the lodge is nestled in the side of a steep hill with many steps, Mr C. went a developed his very own Tram… with bell and all. Just climb in and take a very nice ride to the top. This is a wonderful thing for older people who may have some physical limitation’s. The dining area is simply off the chart, with a beautiful bar and a chef named Fidel which will leave you wondering, where has he been hiding? And now the fishing. Mr C. has a fleet of vessels (28-34ft) that are outfitted to fight the really big boys. And believe me, I did ! The Captain’s and crew are all well trained and make sure that you have as good a time as possible.
I have been around the world and seen many so called fishing lodge’s. But this one is rated 5 star….it’s the very best. So, go one, spoil yourself, live a little and let the rest of the world go by…if only for a short while. Jim Scarlata – International Angler and Lecturer

Beautiful location on top of a mountain on an island with near 360 views. The hosts/owners Mark and Karen were maximum nice, hospitable and genuine, making you feel warm and welcome. First night just sitting poolside was very relaxing and although I have no photos of my own the ones I have seen listed are spot on. The pool design is beautiful with the swim up bar and hilltop views. A/C bar and dining if you want it

28-31′ sportfish boats with twin diesels, very comfortable and fished well. 28 Carolina Classic I was on ran very well and the crew very professional. Very good fishing gear with $1,000 Stella spinners and mix of Penn and Tiagra 30’s thru 80″s.

Had a great time with my friends.

“Fishing Trip of a Lifetime”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2013

I am 55 years old and have been offshore fishing the majority of my adult life. I am a serious angler and have fished the Eastern Atlantic extensively as this is near my home but also travel regularly to other destinations. These have included multiple trips to Hawaii (Big Island), Eastern and Western Mexico, Costa Rica, DR, Florida Keys, and The Gulf of Mexico. I chose Panama this year specifically to target Blue Marlin. A species that has eluded me.

My search for a fishing venue was in-depth. I arrived at the choice of the Panama Big Game Club based upon reputation but most importantly with my contact with the owner Mark Charman (“Mr. C”). From these discussions it became clear to me that Mr. C was as passionate about offshore angling as I am. He understood my desires to target Blue Marlin and we spent serious time panning times, moon phases and tides to come across what was felt to be the ideal time. He took great efforts to answer my questions personally and was attentive to my requests.

The trip outcome: UNBELIEVABLE!!!

From the moment we arrived in Panama we were immediately met at the gate by a Panama Big Game Club representative. Do not worry about anything once you arrive in Panama City. She escorted us through immigration in about five minutes and took us to a VIP room for drinks and snacks while our bags were picked up. (Never touched my bags until we arrived at the club). We were then met by a second representative Auro who was as pleasant and kind as I could hope for. She took us for a short ride for lunch and gave us some history on Panama City and the Canal. Next to the airport for our flight to David. Everything, and I mean everything was handled from bags to check in to covering for extra luggage wt. (I brought all me own tackle) at no charge. Flight to David, Carlos and Mrs. C are waiting for us at the airport. Once again, drinks in the car during the drive to the club. This is all included!

The club: WOW!

Situated on a stunning overlook of the river and small port, the club itself is nothing but beautiful. Infinity pool, hot tub with waterfall, poolside bar and lovely vistas. When Mr. C talks about Jurassic Park he fails to mention “and no expenses sparred”. He has done an outstanding job at landscaping, restoration of the living quarters, the dining and club area etc. Absolutely TOP RATE!

Mr. C.: I thought I was intense about offshore angling and one for details, this guy has me beat. He absolutely loves fishing and cares deeply about the ecology of the Hannibal Bank area. He takes care to be sure circle hooks are the standard. No Cuberras are taken do to their very long growth cycle. Once enough fish is caught to supply the club everything is released by the crew. This all comes down from Mr. C’s philosophy. He runs the club in only the highest standards.

The food is wonderful. The colorful chef, Fidel, will not only prepare to order any fish, meat etc but will also entertain you with his Panamanian warmth and smiles. Carlos and Captain Victor are also right there making sure you have anything you need. The service is personal and only with smiles and care. Quite frankly I have NEVER had such pampering. It was great!

Now to the really important stuff: Fishing.

Panama Big Game Club is unique in this remote area in that it offers a variety of larger boats as apposed to mid 20″ center consoles offered by other clubs. The boats are immaculate and fast. This is important as you do have a long ride to the Islands and the Hannibal bank. Although the Pacific waters off Panama are generally calm, there was a regular morning offshore breeze that did kick up a 2-3ft. swell for several hours. Riding in the Bertram: Smooth and comfy. The competing clubs center consuls pounding and slow. Our crew was absolutely top notch. Captain Tati and our mate Narciso (Hollywood) were well seasoned professionals. Rapid deployment and preparation of various bates and lures and no wasted time resting or changing tactics if the hour was slow. I did bring my own tackle however this is completely unnecessary. The boat was equipped with and assortment of Tiagra 30’s, 50’s and 80’s all in pristine condition. Spinning gear; Shimano Stella’s. Rods primarily custom Melton gear. Outstanding.

The Catch: Lost count of the number of 30-40 lb Maui, Multiple Large 100lb + Sails, Back to back Blue Marlin (~300-350lbs) and Black Marlin (~ 250 lbs), two 100 lb tuna on spinning gear (my arms are still recovering), Cuberra and Mullet snapper (30-50 lbs), Rooster fish (3 in one hour one weighing in at 62 lbs), Blue snapper, big eye jack, amberjack, red snapper: In all 13 species in one week! The end result: A fishing trip of a lifetime. Do not miss an opportunity for a day of inshore. The fish are abundant and varied and the scenery is outrageously beautiful.

All in all: With no reservations I can comfortably say that this has been the most outstanding fishing and vacation experience of my life. The Panama Game club so far exceeds any other fishing club or resort I have ever visited that it is literally in a league by itself. Be prepared to be pampered and have sore muscle from the monsters waiting in Panama. Bravo Mr. and Mrs. C!!!!

Panama Big Game Club was an unreal fishing adventure like no other. We flew into Panama on a quick flight from Florida. After a quick flight from Panama City to David, we met our wonderful guide to transfer us to the lodge. With a cooler full of water and soda, we enjoyed a beautiful drive to the docks. At the docks, we were met by a Panama Big Game boat and some helpers that took our bags and drove us to the lodge. The sight of the lodge for the first time will be forever etched into my memory. It was such a breathtaking sight. The steep island looks over an archipelago that is only found in Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Truly, it is an unbelievable view.

The lodge was even prettier than the photos. Everything has been updated from the flat screen TV’s to the latest computers to check your email at the lodge. After a long day of fishing, dipping in the beautiful pool was the perfect ending to an eventful day. The staff continued to keep my drink full and brought terrific hors d’oeuvres until I couldn’t eat another bite! The chef prepared ceviche and fresh fish everyday that we were there.

The Fishing. Last but not least. Lets start with the fact that the nickname for this place is “Jurassic Park”. The trip to the fishing grounds is super quick and relaxing, especially when lounging in bean bag chairs on the back of the boat. Fishing in on the Hannibal Bank and Isal Montuosa were incredible. This fishery is truly spectacular. Whether you are chasing Marlin, Mahi, Mullet Snapper, or Sailfish the hunt is on. I have never been anywhere where catching bait involves trolling larger than life sabiki rigs to get full stringers of Bonita to use as Marlin candy. Mahi Mahi here are larger here than anywhere I’ve ever fished, and reeling them in as they jump all the way to the boat is exciting.

This place is magical. If you like fishing, food, relaxation, and memories that will last forever, then Panama Big Game lodge will be your new favorite place in the world.

We planned a trip on short notice, and Mr C worked with us to fit the few days we had available in order to get us onto some fish while we were in Panama. We had escorts and knowledgeable drivers all the way to the boat ramp, and some of the best mixed drinks I have ever tasted once we made it to the island. All inclusive meant all inclusive, and the staff never let us lift a finger.

Above all, I come to fish, but our biggest regret when we left was that we didn’t just spend a day sitting by the pool and relaxing. The view is incredible! As far as the fishing, we caught so many fish the first day we started tracking by species instead of by size. My second fish to hook onto was a 90 lb. yellowfin, which set the biggest fish I’ve ever caught (a record that didn’t last long).

We fished all day, the crew kept the boat clean, we had a great lunch on the boat, and I don’t think 30 minutes passed by without us hooking something. We trolled, bottom fished, even got some time in with light tackle and topwater lures for feeding tuna. The second day I landed my first blue marlin, 350 pounds, and enjoyed the fight of a lifetime. When we caught sailfish and blue marlin, I was amazed to see how much time the captain spent making sure the fish was 100% when released.

Evenings we returned to share stories with the other groups of people – everyone was friendly, and we all opted to share the dinner table together. Each night we ate what we caught. In fact, even the breakfast was incredible each morning before getting on the boat. Our last day we left for an early flight, but we got to watch the sunrise over breakfast on the balcony. As the sky lit up, the monkeys in the surrounding trees let us know it was morning!

Mr C even took the time to ask us what amenities or activities would make our next trip better. We are already planning our return trip, and we’re not looking for another place to go. We’re just looking for who to bring with us next time.

This Christmas my family and I chose to go to Panama for nine days. My grandfather is an avid fly fisherman and he has been to this resort before back in 2001. Since then he has said that Panama Big Game Fishing Club has changed so much since the last time he has been there. The service is awesome and so is the fishing. The crew is the best crew that my whole family has ever seen and let me just say that the food is just amazing. The resort is kind of small which is good because it gives the resort a community kind of feeling. Everyone that stays there gets a chance to know each other and hopefully makes new friends or acquaintances. This is an awesome place to stay and fish if anyone is interested.

Yes, I am the spouse of an avid fisherman, who is given the task a few times a year, of coming up with accommadations that suite me, a fashion executive, as well as being a secluded spot somewhere in the world that is unspoiled with really great fishing. This Winter, we chose Panama.

We ended up at a gorgeous spot a boat ride away from Boca Chica, but found the new owners to be less than attentive. Before we headed back to Panama City a day early, we had a chance meeting with a charming British gentleman who invited us to spend the day at his new fishing Club. We took him up on this offer, and as my husband spent the day fishing on his boat, I was introduced to this new lodge.

Still in the process of being completed, the rooms, grounds, food and service were already beyond my expectations, above and beyond a mere “Fishing Club”, and certainly not a Mens Only spot. The small but chic pool area overlooked the jungle on one side, and the ocean on the other, perfect for spotting the howler monkeys after enjoying lunch. I have traveled the world, both for business and pleasure, and few places have been able to please both of us as PBGFC did. The all inclusive rate is also extremely reasonable …..so you can stay even longer, its a hard place to leave.

My wife and I spent some time at this fishing resort while in Panama earlier this month. The new owners whom we had the pleasures of meeting were almost finished with a multimillion dollar renovation of this hallowed game fishing destination.

Mark and Karen as you would expect from any caring owner operators, were on site and very involved in making the decisions to allowing the transformation of a previously austere fishing lodge to a first class resort with all the amenities that one might expect, all contained within the hill side of a biologically diverse island and nature sanctuary.
I spent one day fishing with Mark’ son and MD of fishing operations using one of their well-equipped deep sea fishing boats. The local Captain and deck hand expertly put us on some game fish and we were rewarded with a great complete fishing experience. They provided one of the best picnic lunches that I have ever had on such an outing.

Mark believes very strongly in the conservation of this great fishery by practicing sensible catch and release policies and adherers to all IGFA rules and regulation, which was a rare but welcome find in this fast developing nation of Panama.
After fishing my wife and I joined Mark and his lovely wife Karen for an afternoon libation and some great freshly caught ceviche and learned of their future plans for this amazing resort.

I plan to visit them again in the next month or two and highly recommend them to any discerning travelers looking for the perfect blend of action, fun, food, and amenities all without spoiling the great feeling of surrender to an unspoiled natural setting.

Having spent most of my adult life fishing in one remote tropical outpost or another, it was instantly recognizable that Mr. C and company have not taken the easy route with the Panama Big Game Fishing Club, and instead are truly building a show place in the jungle. From the stainless steel railings to the stonework in the rooms, attention to detail and quality is obvious. But that is just the physical improvements. Victor, the new manager is truly a first rate operator and has a great future ahead of him, and with the Club. As Mr. C says, “if you did not get what you wanted while at PBGFC it is only because you did not ask for it”….and that is the truth. No menus, not set dining times and no set dining place. Want to sit under a tree and drink wine and munch a steak? They will figure it out for you. Your trip is your own to customize.

The crews on the boats are some of the hardest working guys in the business and toil til the end so you catch fish. When we were there yellowfin tuna were providing the action, and I really think that they are on to a very special offering with throwing poppers to huge Ahi. That is just one thing that makes PBGFC unique.

All in all, it is no small endeavor to created and keep a first class outfit going in a remote location, but PBGFC is testament to “how it is done”.

“Why I love my Dad”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 31, 2012

Why I love my Dad
This all started with a deal I had made with my father. IF I could graduate high school with honours, I would earn the trip of a lifetime. Eight months, and a heck of a lot of work later, I managed to exceed my expectations and not only did I pass, but I passed with honours, HOORAY!.
I had two decisions to make. The first was easy. I wanted to go fishing with my Dad !!!. After extensive research and due diligence, there was only one place I wanted to go to- The legendary Panama Big Game Fishing Club, Isla Boca Brava, Panama. I read about the world-renowned Hannibal Bank and Montuosa Island and the monstrous Tuna and Marlin that are produced from them.
From the arrival at Panama Airport, I was whisked through customs and immigrations from the PBGFC Royal VIP meet service and was enjoying a beer in there VIP Saloon within 3 min’s of getting off the plane, no waiting in line for me and Dad, for an hour like the rest of the passengers . The same happened all the way to the dock of the club, everything was smooth sailing, this is the only way to travel.
As soon as we arrived on Isla Boca Brava, we were greeted by the staff, and although it was the middle of the night, everyone belonging to the club was willing to cater to our every need. We hit the mattress early and were awoken to a steaming cup of the finest Panamanian coffee and a hearty breakfast of whatever we requested.
We stepped on to an immaculate boat with a hardworking Skipper and Mate. I can’t emphasize enough the work these people did to get us the fish we want. We slammed some monster snapper and had a great day on the water. Later in the week we even had a huge Marlin on, even though we lost it a couple minutes later, it had certainly raised the heart rate of everyone on board.
We stepped off the boat and were welcomed with a cold beer and whatever snack we requested. The food at the Club was first-rate. The chef, Fidel, was truly a professional, and would cater to whatever you wanted to eat. After a delicious meal, it was an amazing touch to sit in the Jacuzzi with a drink and chat about our day’s adventures and reflect about the greatest catch of the day.
To summarize an overall exhilarating trip, I was overly impressed by the accommodation that were simply fantastic. The care that the Club takes of its guests to the island of Boca Brava is just first class. I couldn’t begin to describe the lengths of the crew had gone to, to make sure that this was a family feel. Within hours of being here, I had felt like I was at my own home. Although we hadn’t landed the record breaking fish this week, the feeling I received while out on the ocean was amazing. The time I spent fifty miles out with my Dad offshore, chatting ,laughing and fishing will stay with me for the rest of my life. I dream of the day I can return here and bring my father and my grandfather for a week to catch the dream marlin that all of us fishermen dream to reel in.
I am sitting at the pool bar writing this review, before I have to leave first thing in the morning to Panama City, wondering how I can earn the cash to bring my Dad and Grandfather back here next time, but this time on me to catch the Marlin that escaped back into what they call here” Jurassic Park”, to put on a few hundred pounds more for our next meeting. Thank you Dad for showing me the power of hard work. I will truly never forget this experience, and await the day we come back.

“Father’s Day Delight at Panama Big Game Fishing Club”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 6, 2012

What more could a Father ask for, a daughter visiting from the States who likes to fish and a day with 5 tuna to 50 pounds topped off by a 500 lb Blue Marlin that tried to drag me off of the boat!!

My story

Here I was planning my daughter’s arrival from the US and setting up a little boating with a friend in Boca Chica when I get this call from Dubai. Dubai, what the heck!!! Well it was a guy named Mark Charman who introduced himself and proceeded to tell me that he is the guy who bought the legendary Panama Big Game Fishing Club in Boca Chica and he enjoyed reading my blog. He invited me to visit with him sometime and I told him that I would stop by and check out his resort when I took my daughter boating. Well one thing led to another and before I knew it my daughter and I were at his resort enjoying a wonderful evening and preparing for a day of fishing.

Arrival is via boat then a short funicular ride up to the resort on top of the hill. And of course the complimentary beverage and shrimp cocktail! The resort has been completely rebuilt and an infinity pool was added with a swim up bar overlooking the water where we enjoyed an incredible sunset.

The next morning we were up before dawn and headed out to sea by 6:15 on the hunt for big game and we were not disappointed.

The long ride out was smooth and uneventful as we were on a classic 31 Bertram Sportfish powered by new Cummins diesels. Before we knew it we were in a pod of dolphin that follow tuna and in one cast we were hooked up.

Next up, 4 more of these nice fish and then off to catch bigger bait for bigger fish. We got some nice bonito, loaded up the tuna tubes and then set out a nice spread of bridled baits. And oh yes, our mate Jeffrey can bridle a bonito in under 30 seconds insuring fresh presentation in the water.

Within 45 minutes the right outrigger clip popped and we had a FISH ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I had hooked up my first blue marlin and set in for a long fight. After an hour and fifteen minutes, I could not raise the fish as it sounded and with the mates help, we got the fish to the boat in an other 15 minutes where we released it unharmed. Better to break a IGFA rule and have someone help manage the line while you crank so you do not kill the fish. Estimated weight — 500 pounds, yeah baby!!

We arrived back at the resort and I can tell you that this was probably the most memorable fishing trip in my life. After catching a few smaller black marlin here in Panama, I finally tagged a big blue and was I happy! This was after I caught the 5 tuna to 50 lbs. The chef prepared a wonderful spread of fresh yellow fin sashimi and we ate every last piece.

The next morning was a beautiful day waking up at poolside watching the monkeys playing and eating in the trees next to us. We could not have had a better time and I looked forward to coming back to Panama Big Game Club soon and fishing with Mr C.

One of the best fishing resorts in Panama!! Well done Mark

My dad and I spent Father’s Day weekend at PBGFC – two nights two days and a full-day deep sea fishing trip. We arrived right before dinner time and were greeted with shrimp cocktails and caprese salad appetizers along with our drinks – the bartender makes a delicious dirty martini!

Then we spent a little while chilling in the jacuzzi and infinity pool – amazing views all around and just the perfect temperature – followed by a perfectly rare filet mignon and fresh vegetable dinner.

We went for a beautiful pre-bed time swim – the jacuzzi and infinity pool are lit with LED lights at night. We headed to bed early so we could get up at dawn for the full day of fishing. The room was wonderful – amazing walk-in shower and bathroom; huge TV with fishing DVDs on hand; four comfy beds; big couches and a little living room area.

We got up and headed to an awesome made-to-order breakfast – the chef is amazing. We headed down to the Bertram 31 Sportfish – gorgeous boat – for our full day fishing trip. They have bean bags on board! The whole trip was so comfortable I even took a nap on the way back in. We caught five 50+ pound tuna and my dad battled a 500+ pound marlin up to the boat – mind-blowing experience and fresh fish for dinner.

As soon as we returned we rode (with trimmed tuna in hand) the train lift up to the resort – no walking dozens of steps after a long day on the boat is so wonderful! My dad hopped in the pool and I opted for the jacuzzi, which they kept at a nice cool temperature for me – so perfect.

We had a few drinks and ate a fresh sashimi dinner of the most delicious tuna – so awesome to catch your own dinner!

Overall, the trip was amazing – as the title states. I’d go on, but the pictures say it all!

About the food, boat and crew, I can see they are a hard working bunch

The fishing was spectacular; 12 tunas, 7 dorados, 5 rooster fish, 5 snappers and all within the 50-60pds. We tried catching marlins but for a few hours we didn’t see anything and returned to the tuna. Anyway, all this was in June, which was low season. I can’t imagine going on March. Every afternoon, once we arrived from the fishing the chef would bring different types of creations with the fresh fish we caught. The kids loved it!

The resort is beautiful, with all sorts of birds and other wildlife such as monkeys, which are everywere. The facilities are brand new with a refreshing pool that overlooks the river and a very comfortable salon to have your meals and a few drinks after the fishing. The rooms are very spacious and with all the best equipment, big bathrooms and very comfortable beds. The whole structure is built up on the mountain but they even have a small cable car to take you up there. The best part was the service.

From the moment they picked us up at the airport in David, the treatment was amazing. The whole crew made sure that we had a great time, and we did! My kids say that “its the best hotel they have been in…”

Next time I would probably go only for 3 days since the kids did get tired after a few days at sea. The weather was great but the trips are long, but worth it!

I have not visited other fishing resorts but these guys raised the bar very high. Thanks to Capt Mike, Victor and the whole crew for a great experience my kids (and I) will never forget!

“April trip-awesome!”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2012

A friend and i had the fortune of making a last minute trip to the lodge in april. i had been to panama previously twice and this trip was the way to go. no hassels from the minute we landed. vip service waiting for us,less than 3 minutes at customs, wisked to our overnite hotel, and promply picked up and taken for our last leg of the trip to the lodge. it took all the worries out of a foriegn country trip.
the accomadations ,lodge, swim up to a bar pool, and the the mountain top view from the island it is situated on was breathtaking.the new owner obviously has spared nothing to make it one of the best fishing destinations in panama.the open bar, nitely ordourves, and the meals were at a level of the very finest resturants.on shore staff also went out of their way to have everything right including daily laundry (next time i’m only bringing 2 changes),wake up coffee delivered to our villa for an eye opener before breakfast, etc.the boats were spacious and well maintained, the equipment and fishing gear was all new and high quality.the captians and mates were expereinced and put forth sincere efforts every trip out. our best fishing was tunas to 125# with alot of 50-60#,and my favorite, inshore was outstanding with roosters to 60#,caberas up over 50#,big groupers and snappers and we never saw another boat fishing inshore . bait was easy to get each am. we did not hit the marlin bite the day we tried with the full moon and the highest tides of the season. we were told but wanted to go for the home run and the captian put in extra hrs trying to make it happen.previous groups boated big blacks. thats fishing.next time! ypu can’t go wrong if ou are looking for a high end fishing lodge on some the best fishing areas in panama.

“Son’s spring break trip”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2012

My son and I fished at the lodge for his spring break. While the fishing was a bit slower than normal, everything else about this place was outstanding. The accommodations, food, booze, captains, mates, and other staff were simply the best and did everything possible to make our stay the best it could be. We never asked for anything twice, and in most cases got what we wanted without asking. Captain Lee and company are incredible cooks and you should not plan on losing any weight at this lodge.
I did check all the competing lodges on the Panama coast and it seems that they all had an unusually slower fishing week. That’s fishing, so I have no issues with it. I know our captain and mate did everything possible to put us on, or keep us on fish, and never stopped trying. The live baiting was new to us as we have only trolled dead bait and we learned a lot. We also did some inshore fishing and had some really nice Snapper to go with the Tuna and Marlin we got offshore.
Room Tip: No fitness center or spa on site. A pool table would be a welcome addition

“Simply…..perfect!”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2012

A friend and i stayed at PBGFC for 6 days from april 5th to the 11th. The vip service as soon as we landed was excellent and it literally took us less than 3 minutes to get through customs etc.
We then took our short flight to David and were greeted by Victor and Capt Scott. So far everything was smooth and we could already sense the professionalism and courtesy of the operation. After a pleasant 1 hour ride to Boca Chica we boarded a small water taxi and 5 minutes later we were on Boca Brava ( the island the resort is on). Our bags were taken from us, we took a short cable car ride up to the top of th resort ( was fun) and once there we were very impressed by how beautiful the surrounding jungle was but even more impressed with the resort. Awsome pool, clubhouse, and the villas were 5 star, just perfect. So far i was impressed and we had not evev fished yet.
At 5.30 am our crew woke us with fresh coffee and we started our adventure. We came down to the marina and were greeted by great boats and impressive very new equipment, (having been all over central america i really appreciate good equipment as i have been burned by it before).
We boarded and quickly went and caught bait. After that a comfy ride to isla montousa and some awesome sportfishing. I won’t bore you with every days details but i will say it was the best 5 day fishing trip i have been on. I personally caught my biggest tuna(125 pounds), biggest amberjack (60 pounds), biggest rooster (60 plus pounds) and biggest mutton snapper (35 pounds). My partner also had a goal of catching a large rooster and big cubera and he succeeded at both catching a 50 pound plus rooster, 45 pound and 55 pound cubera all in the same day.
In closing all i can say is….get off yout butt and go here. You will catch fish and be treated like royalty and the food? My god it was amazing
I have been all over traveling and fishing and this place is simply head and shoulders above the rest.

Sorry for late response but is no reflection on the superior quality of our experience at PBGFC. My father and I had a great time at this top level lodge. Our travel through the country with VIP service was the best I have experienced in a foreign country (a private trip to the Panama Canal was even arranged). The renovations to the pool/restaurant/lodges speak for themselves. The food and personalized service was outstanding and began upon arrival (who gets personal laundry service at a fishing lodge?). Although the fishing was slow our crew worked has hard as possible to put us on the fish. We hooked to 2 blacks and my father landed his first sail which will always be rememebered. I have fished in Guatemala, Costa Rica, Bermuda, Grand Cayman, and Madeira and have not a harder working crew.

I urge anyone who wants a top notch fishing experience in a first class, laid back atmosphere to go to PBGFC!

Could not have been a better trip. The improvements to the resort are excellent. We did not see the need for a pool but that atitude has changed 100%. Getting in at 5:00 PM and going to the pool for an hour makes the experience even better. The food was, as usual, excellent but unfotunately I gained 5 lbs which I am not regretting. The staff is excellent and the service they provide could not be better.

I would not think about going anywhere else. At a minimum my brother and I will return in the summer and definitely will be back, probably with a big group, in March. Anyone can call me at any time to ask me questions about my experiences at the Panama Big Game Resort. This was out third trip.
Room Tip: They are all the same. The closer the room is to the pool and dining room would be the best.

“Fantastic Fishing and Lodging Experience”

Well I just can’t express how much Capt Lee and his staff bent over backwards for you. The accomidations were nothing but fantastic, all completely remodeld and clean. The food was just out of this world, it was as if you were at a 5 star resturant, with the open bar. I recommend PBGFC to all who would like to fish Panama, their prices are far superior to other lodges in the area. Thier VIP service is incrediable from the time you arrive Panama until you leave you are catered too. The boats, crew and gear are all top notch. Made some great long distance friends and we will be back to see them in the near future. Victor, thanks for making the crown for the Bonito King. For an experience of a life time you must visit PBGFC.

I cannot say enough about how well Capt Lee and Capt Scott made our experience second to none. The food and drinks by Capt Lee and Victor was like being at a 5 star restaurant and Capt Scott and the crews all worked very hard every day. I would recommend this trip to anyone looking for fishing or just R&R. All you Guys out there great place to fish and bring the significant other top notch accommodations. “Excellent Service and Nice Accomodations for fishing”

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2012

Capt. Lee and staff did an excellent job taking care of my husband and I from the second we landed in Panama City. The resort was recently renovated with new finishes and a pool/spa. However, it is still a bit rough around the edges given it’s relatively remote location. The movies only worked sometimes and the water temperature control was not great. that said, the service made up for the other short comings and the food was truly delicious. Fishing during our stay in March was unseasonably slow but that was largely out of Anyones control. Bottom line is that I would recommend this to you if you have lots of dough and want to try for a fish of a lifetime.

“Excellent 85th Birthday Celebration”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2012

I celebrated my 85th birthday at PBGFC in February, and it was phenomenal!! I made an excellent choice of venue, and I can whole heartedly recommend PBGFC to any one without reservation. My guests all said that they had never experienced any trip like it. Your coordination of our travels was excellent. Upon our arrival at the docks, Captain Lee had everything organized and extended everyone a warm welcome and served us an excellent meal (with an adequate supply of beverages). The fishing was amazing, the equipment was new, the boats immaculate… they purred like kittens. Your director of fishing, Scott, did a great job of keeping my guests happy and entertaining us all with his knowledge of the sea and fishing. Everday when we returned, my friends swam in the beautiful pool, usually with a toddy in hand and would enjoy another excellent meal prepared by Captain Lee and his crew while enjoying the magnificent view from the lodge. It was a wonderful trip — a fantastic 85th. I won’t have another 85th, but I am busting my behind (trip advisor won’t let me use the word that I had originally written) to find a way for a rapid return to PBGFC.

“It’s the little things that make the difference!”

5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2012

I’m writing this review from my wife’s account, because I don’t usually do reviews and don’t have an account. My experience at PBGFC was memorable enough to make me go ahead and help spread the word.

We arrived in Panama City at the International Airport and our 1st class experience began there. I have travelled quite extensively, all over the states, central and south america, europe, etc. Never have I had such VIP service as I did when we arrived in Panama City. The PBGFC rep was there to meet us when we got off the plane. We were brought to a VIP lounge where we were served drinks, and had the chance to freshen up, check email, or read the paper while they took care of getting our passports stamped and gathering our luggage. No waiting in line, no hauling our gear. 1st class.

After making our way to the regional aiport and once again getting the VIP treatment we were off to David. In David we were once again greeted by a PBGFC representative, loaded into a very comfortable van and had a few beers on the short trip to the bay. After cruising across the bay in a small boat we reached one of the most beautiful lodges I have ever been to.

Our luggage was brought to our room while we were greeted by the staff, had our drink orders taken and were presented with huge plates of delicious ahi sashimi! The staff was incredibly attentive and friendly and were so throughout our entire trip.

After a wonderful dinner and few more drinks we were ready to hit the sack. We had a really nice room with a new 50+ inch flat screen “smart tv” that was loaded with shows, movies and most importantly awesome videos that previous clients had taken of their fishing adventures. We fell asleep watching action of huge 500+ lb Marlin and I for one had some wonderful dreams!

We were awoken the next morning to some excellent Panamanian Coffee and a great cooked to order breakfast. It was time to fish.

We made our way down to the boats, were introduced to our crew and were asked what we wanted to fish for and given a run down of what had been happening out on the water. Always nice to know what has been happening and even nicer to be asked what our goals were and what WE wanted to do.

I won’t go into detail about every day on the water, but we fished two different boats with two different crews and both were outstanding. I am a boat owner myself, I have very extensive offshore fishing experience and have worked in the industry for many many years now. I can say that from the quality of gear, upkeep of boats, attitude of the crew and the hardworking nature of everyone involved, these guys are some of the best in the business.

Water temps were warmer than normal and the currents weren’t ripping through the way we wanted, all in all, it was slow fishing by Panamanian standards. This of course meant that it was still better than any other place I have visited and fished. I’ve been on enough trips to know when the Captains and Mates are at their wits end, and they certainly were. They were ready for the fish to start biting, but we all know you can’t make that happen. They pulled out everything they had in their bag of tricks and worked their tails off. When you get off a boat and don’t catch what you expect, you can’t complain if you see that your crew did everything in their power to get you the bites. I always set my expectations very high, you have to if you want to be successful right? It certainly doesn’t mean the trip wasn’t a huge success.

That being said, we still caught a ton of fish, some huge Sailfish, some huge Tuna, countless species of bottom fish in the Jack and Snapper family. We missed out on a Big Black or Big Blue Marlin, but that happens. I’ve caught enough of those personally, I just wanted to see some of the guys we were with try to tangle with a big fish and have to pass the rod off! Guess I’ll just have to get back down there and do it again.

I have and will recommend Panama Big Game Fishing Club to anyone that will listen.

“Great Time”

Our trip to Panama Big Game Fishing Club was one of a kind experience. We fished hard for fours days and were rewarded for our efforts. Multiple pacific sailfish and a couple of 200lbs Tuna. See photos. My buddy needed a Black to nearly complete his royal flush of billfish but were denied. Leaves us eager to return.
My friend’s father put on the trip for the four of us and he had visited PBGFC in the past. The new management/ownership has only increased a quality establishment and the service gets A+ in all departments. New capital put into the grounds, boats & equipment has paid off. Our captain and mate worked hard to find the fish and engaged us to make our time fishing a real hands on experience.
I cannot say enough about those guys.
The lodge was very clean and the food was off the hook!
Go to Panama Big Game Fishing Club, you will not be disappointed.
